Let the Sunshine In
August 25, 2002

Fourteen teams of architecture and engineering students are hoping for sunny days in Washington, D.C., Sept. 26-Oct.5. That’s when they’ll be spending their days in the "solar village" they’re constructing Sept. 19-24 on the capital’s Mall. The 14 energy-efficient, solar-powered buildings (500 to 800 square feet each) will be based on designs by the students — finalists in the Solar Decathlon, initiated by the American Institute of Architects and the Department of Energy, among others. Each building will be judged in 10 categories, including livability, hot water, refrigeration and lighting. Each also should store enough solar energy to run a home-based business and power an electric car. For details, visit
